Many people are familiar with ductless air conditioning, but not a lot know how it actually works. Today’s blog from Climate Systems Heating and Cooling takes a look at how it operates and why it can be the best choice for your home over the more traditional central AC systems.

What Is Ductless Air Conditioning?

Ductless air conditioners, also known as split systems, are a type of cooling system that does not rely on ducts to distribute cool air. The components of the system are split between the outdoor condenser unit and the indoor air handler, both of which are connected via copper refrigerant lines or tubes. These two parts can be located up to 50 feet away from one another, allowing for flexibility in placement and installation.

How Does Ductless Air Conditioning Work?

Ductless air conditioning systems consist of two main components: the condenser unit and the evaporator unit. The condenser is located outdoors, and is usually secured to a wall via brackets. It circulates coolant through the tubing that’s linked to the interior-mounted unit. This part of the system houses the evaporator, air handler and filters, and is responsible for emitting cooled air indoors. For both parts of this system to function correctly, they must be connected by copper refrigerant lines.

Benefits of Ductless Air Conditioning

Using a ductless air conditioning system comes with many benefits. For one, it helps reduce energy costs through more efficient cooling than their traditional central air counterparts, saving homeowners money on electricity bills. It can also be paired with an air purifier if you want to further improve indoor air quality.

Ductless air conditioning also operates more quietly due to the lack of large ventilation systems necessary for air transfer. More importantly, you have the option to create zones for your interior spaces. In fact, you can connect up to five indoor units to a single outdoor unit. Each indoor unit can be operated independently to deliver air comfort to rooms where needed.
